Bears Sitges Week: A First-Timer’s Guide

If you have been thinking about going to Bears Sitges Week, or searching for Sitges Bear Week or Sitges Bears Week and wondering whether it is really for you, our answer is simple.
Go.
Make the plans. Pack the bags. Bring the Speedo.
We have been coming to Bears Sitges Week every September since 2020, and there really is nowhere else quite like it. Sitges feels a little upside down in the best possible way. Bigger guys, older guys, hairy guys, muscle bears, cubs, chubs, chasers and plenty of guys who do not care about labels all find their place here.
You fit in. You belong. You feel good.
And the biggest mistake you can make is trying to plan every minute.
Bears Sitges Week 2027 at a Glance
Bears Sitges Week 2027 runs September 2 through September 12, 2027 in Sitges, Spain.
The weekends are the busiest, but there is something happening throughout the entire event.
If you have enough vacation time, come for all 10 days.
If you are also joining the After Bears Sitges Week Cruise, consider arriving for the final few days of Bear Week, enjoying the biggest weekend energy, then continuing with us on the seven-night cruise from September 12 through September 19.
You can see the 2027 cruise details here:
Why Bears Sitges Week Is Different
Most bear events have a host hotel.
Bears Sitges Week does not.
There is no single ballroom, pool deck or convention center where everything happens. Sitges itself becomes the event.
Think of Sitges as the Provincetown of Europe.
The beaches fill with bears. The bars fill with bears. The restaurants fill with bears. You see harnesses walking down the street. You see old friends, new friends and guys you swore you saw at Balmins (the gay bear nude beach) two hours ago.
You stop for one drink and suddenly it is dinner time.

That is the magic.
Bears Sitges Week feels less like attending an event and more like a complete city takeover.
The spring Sitges Bear Meeting is a separate, smaller event. It usually takes place around late April or early May. Do not confuse its schedule, package pricing or program with the larger September Bears Sitges Week.
First: What Exactly Is a Bear?
We tend to think of a bear as a gay man roughly 35 and older, often with some body hair and the kind of body many people would call an average dad bod.
But the labels are loose.
There are muscle bears. Younger guys are often called cubs. Bigger guys may identify as chubs. People who are attracted to bears and bigger men are often called chasers.
Some bears are smooth.
Nobody cares.
That is why CruisingBears uses Bears, Chubs & Chasers. We want the community to include different body types and the people who admire them.
Sitges is particularly special for older and bigger guys because the usual rules can feel reversed here.
The body you might feel pressured to hide somewhere else may suddenly be getting second looks on the promenade.
So if you are worried that you are too old, too big, too skinny, too hairy or not hairy enough, stop worrying.
Sitges is not the place to spend your vacation hiding the body you brought with you.
Confidence is key.
What Makes the Experience So Special
During Bears Sitges Week, the boundaries between “the event” and normal vacation life disappear.
Breakfast becomes part of the social scene.
The walk to the beach becomes part of the social scene.
Shopping becomes part of the social scene.
Happy hour becomes part of the social scene.
There are official events and ticketed parties, but you do not need a ticket to feel like you are participating.
That is important for first-timers.
You are going to miss things.
Get comfortable with that.
There may be a pool party at the same time somebody invites you to lunch. Someone you met at Balmins (the gay bear nude beach) may suggest drinks. You may intend to go shopping and end up sitting in Judgement Square for three hours.
If you do not like changing plans, Sitges may cure you.
Where to Stay for Bears Sitges Week

Location matters more than first-timers realize.
Yes, you can save money by staying farther away, especially across the railroad tracks.
But after a few late nights, you quickly understand why paying more to be near the center was worth it.
Our rule is simple:
Stay close to the nighttime action and walk farther during the day.
Use Parrots Sitges Hotel and Plaça de la Indústria as your geographic center point when comparing accommodations.
Parrots Sitges Hotel
This is about as central as it gets.
You are right in the middle of the gay nightlife area and steps from Plaça de la Indústria.
Best for: Maximum convenience · Pro: You are in the center of everything · Con: The center of everything can also be noisy
Hotel Calipolis
Hotel Calipolis is one of the most popular places for Bears Week visitors and is frequently used for event-related activities.
It is a short walk from the nightlife core and close to the beachfront.
Best for: Travelers who want a full-service hotel · Pro: Very popular during Bear Week · Con: Slightly farther from the bar core than Parrots
Hotel Platjador
Hotel Platjador is very conveniently located on the beach side and close to the Bear Village area.
Best for: Travelers who prioritize the waterfront · Pro: Excellent central location · Con: Availability disappears quickly
Choose Hotel Platjador specifically from the hotel group website.
Hotel MiM Sitges
Hotel MiM offers a more upscale environment at roughly the same general walking distance from the nightlife area as Hotel Calipolis.
Best for: Travelers looking for a more polished hotel experience · Pro: Upscale atmosphere and convenient location · Con: Usually more expensive
Hotel Subur
Hotel Subur is older and usually more affordable, but the location is excellent.
It is close to the nightlife and on the beach side of town.
Best for: Value-minded travelers · Pro: Very convenient location · Con: Less upscale than newer hotels
Stay Like a Local
Airbnb and VRBO can be excellent options, especially for longer stays.
Apartments also give you a kitchen, which can make it easier to save money on breakfast, coffee, sandwiches and simple lunches.
You can also check a local Sitges rental company.
Insider Tip #1: Check for an Elevator
That bargain rooftop apartment may look fantastic until you realize you are hauling luggage up five flights of stairs.
Always check whether the building has an elevator.
Insider Tip #2: Confirm the Air Conditioning
Do not assume an apartment has air conditioning.
Ask.
You are going to appreciate it when you return from the beach or from a crowded night out.
Download the Bears Sitges Magazine
One of the easiest ways to start planning is to download the official Bears Sitges Magazine.
Use it for hotel ideas, bars, restaurants, transportation and local businesses that actively support Bears Sitges Week.
That matters.
Supporting the businesses that support Bear Week helps keep money flowing back into the community and helps the event continue to grow.
CruisingBears is proud to be one of those sponsors.

Getting From Barcelona Airport to Sitges
There are cheaper ways to get from Barcelona Airport to Sitges.
We still recommend spending the money on the easiest one.
After a long flight, you are tired.
You have luggage.
You are navigating a strange airport.
You are checking directions on your phone.
Your attention is divided.
That is exactly when we would rather pay for convenience.
Our First Choice: Taxi, Bolt or Private Transfer
Expect to pay roughly €60 for a ride from Barcelona Airport to Sitges.
Yes, it costs more than the bus or train.
But you have already paid for an international flight.
This is one place where saving every euro may not be worth the hassle.
You and your luggage leave the airport together, and you and your luggage arrive at your accommodation together.
That is safety, security and efficiency.
Bolt is also popular in Barcelona and can sometimes be less expensive than Uber.
You can also arrange transportation in advance with companies that support the Sitges community.
The Train
The train is cheaper, but it requires a transfer.
Follow the public transportation directions on your smartphone for the current route and schedule.
The biggest challenge is not the train itself.
It is managing your luggage while going up and down stairs, navigating stations and paying attention to everything around you.
The Bus
The bus is usually the cheapest option.
The harder part for first-timers can be finding exactly where to board.
During Bear Week, however, you will probably see plenty of other bears headed in the same direction.
Ask.
Someone will know.
Once your luggage is stored under the bus, pay attention until departure and make sure nobody removes the wrong bag.
It does not happen often, but arriving in Sitges without your suitcase is not the way you want to start your vacation.
Pickpockets: Be Smart, Not Paranoid
We do not want to make Sitges sound dangerous.
It is not.
But airports and crowded transportation hubs are exactly where tired and distracted travelers can become easy targets.
You are especially vulnerable when you have just arrived.
Your hands are full.
You are checking directions.
You are carrying luggage.
You are going up and down stairs.
You do not yet know where you are going.
Keep your wallet out of your back pocket.
Keep bags zipped.
Carry your phone securely.
Do not leave your phone sitting on a café table.
When navigating crowded stairs or transportation stations with luggage, pay extra attention.
Later in the nightlife areas, the same rule applies.
Dark rooms and crowded bars are not the place for an unsecured phone.
Use a locker, zip your phone into a secure pocket, attach it to your shorts or pay with your watch when possible.
What a Great Day at Bears Sitges Week Looks Like
Here is the secret.
There is no one perfect day.
There are choices.
And your plans will probably change.
Morning: Sleep In or Watch Sitges Wake Up
You may wake up early.
You may also wake up at noon because the previous night was much more fun than expected.
Both are correct.
If you are awake, take a quiet walk along the waterfront while much of the town is still sleeping.
Or head to Montroig Cafe for breakfast, coffee and people-watching.
By about 10 a.m., the town starts stirring.
Then make one decision.
Beach or wander?
Option 1: Go to the Beach
Two beaches matter most for first-timers.
The beach around Pic Nic is a popular gay beach area.
But Balmins Beach (the gay bear nude beach) is the scene many bears really want to experience.
Balmins (the gay bear nude beach) is clothing optional and extremely popular during Bear Week.

From Plaça de la Indústria or Parrots, allow roughly 20 minutes on foot.
Arriving around 10 a.m. is smart because space disappears quickly.
Eventually, there may be so many beach towels that you can practically cross the beach without touching sand.
Almost.
The important part is not just the nudity.
It is social.
Smile.
Say hello.
Flirt.
You know the look that says, “you’re hot.”
You are going to get a few of those in Sitges.
Return the favor.
Option 2: Wander Sitges
Do not underestimate how enjoyable it is to simply explore.
Walk the old streets.
Shop.
Stop for coffee.
Walk the promenade.
Find somewhere you did not know existed.
You can spend several days doing this and still feel like you have not seen everything.
Rainy Day Option
If the weather turns bad, check Growlr.
The sauna in Sitges has been known to send a shout and open early when rain changes everyone’s beach plans.
It is small.
It fills quickly.
There may be a line.
In our opinion, it is worth the wait.
Afternoon: The Sitges Siesta Decision
By afternoon, the beach crowd starts drifting back toward town.
This is a perfect time for one of two things.
A nap.
Or a drink in Plaça de la Indústria, affectionately known by many visitors as Judgement Square.
Sit at Parrots Pub & Terrace with everyone facing the square.
Watch the parade.
Judge lovingly.
Have one drink.
Or three.
Eventually, most people head back to their room, cool down in the air conditioning, shower, nap and get ready to do it all again.
Spain Eats Late
This takes Americans a minute to adjust to.
Dinner at 6 p.m. is not really the rhythm here.
Even happy hour can happen at what Americans would consider dinner time.
Bear Bar often has late-evening drink specials, and during Bear Week it is not unusual to see happy hour running from around 9 p.m. to 11 p.m.
By day three, eating dinner at 9:30 or 10 p.m. starts feeling perfectly normal.
Where to Eat During Bears Sitges Week
Sitges has no shortage of food.
You can eat seafood, steak, Thai, Indian, burgers, pizza, Spanish dishes, rotisserie chicken and plenty more.
You really cannot go wrong with most places.
Our personal favorites include:
Le Patio and L’Angle
Great choices when you are in the mood for French food.
L’Oca
Our choice for rotisserie chicken.

Super Pollo
Faster and casual, though we prefer L’Oca for flavor.
Big Al’s
A bear-owned American burger restaurant and an easy recommendation when you want something familiar.
Gaby’s Sitges
One of our favorite beachside lunch stops.
Mediterranium
One of our favorite waterfront dinner options.
Restaurante La Tagliatella
Our pick when we want Italian.
The bigger lesson is not to obsess over reservations for every meal.
Pick a few places you want to try.
Then let the rest happen.
What Food Costs
Sitges is not especially expensive, although prices have been rising.
For planning purposes:
- Coffee: a few euros
- Lunch for two: around €30
- Dinner for two: around €50
- Dinner with wine, cocktails or a nicer restaurant: easily more
- Standard mixed drink: around €10
- Airport taxi or private ride: roughly €60
- Hotel during Bear Week: roughly $200 to $400 per night
A grocery store can help balance your budget.
Buy breakfast supplies.
Make sandwiches.
Grab coffee.
Then spend more on dinner when you feel like it.
Do not think of every meal separately.
Think about the whole trip.
Save here.
Splurge there.
It usually balances out.
Water in Restaurants
If you order bottled water, expect to pay for it.
That is common throughout Spain.
If you specifically want tap water, ask for it.
Tipping in Sitges
American visitors can relax.
You do not need to automatically add 20 percent to every restaurant bill.
Tipping is not expected in the same way it is in the United States.
Leaving €1, €2 or €5 for good service is appreciated.
For taxis or personal services such as a barber, around 10 percent for good service is reasonable and appreciated.
Buy the Bears Sitges Pack Early
If the official September Bears Sitges Pack is available before your trip, buy it.
Do not wait.
They sell out.
Recent September Bears Sitges Week packages have included an official shirt, the Friday-night dinner, drink discounts and other benefits.
One recently advertised September package was €85 and included:
- Official limited-edition shirt
- Official dinner
- Welcome drink
- Multiple 50-percent-off drink coupons
- Other sponsor perks and merchandise
The exact 2027 package price and contents should be checked when sales open.
Do not confuse the September Bears Sitges Week package with the less expensive package offered for the smaller spring Bear Meeting.
Drinks and the Colored Cup System
A normal mixed drink in Sitges is around €10 in our experience.
The pours are not shy.
Expect something closer to half alcohol, half mixer than a timid American resort pour.
Most of the gay bars use similar cups in different colors.
That lets everyone know where your drink came from.
Some bars may only allow their own colored cup inside, but walking around the streets with your drink is part of the Bear Week experience.
The Brothers Tip
Brothers is not officially part of Bear Week, but bears know it.
The clear cups are larger, and in our experience you get considerably more drink for roughly the same €10.
There is frequently a line of thirsty bears.
Thirsty in more than one way.
The Bars: How to Think About Them
During Bears Sitges Week, do not overthink the difference between every bar.
They all sell drinks.
They are all full of bears.
You roam.
That is the point.
COXX and Runway
These are two of our favorite meeting points because there is room to mingle outside.
Once you start making friends, it helps to have a couple of places where you know you can find people again.
Bear Alley
Man Bar, El Horno, La Villa and the surrounding nightlife make up a very dense social zone.
It gets crowded.
Very crowded.
Enjoy it.

Bears Dance
This stands out because it has a real dance-floor experience.
Bears Bar
A long-running bear venue with a popular cruising component.
If you enter darker areas, secure your phone and wallet.
Parrots Pub & Terrace
This is the relaxed option.
Sit.
Drink.
Snack.
Watch everyone walk through Plaça de la Indústria.
Judgement Square earned its nickname for a reason.
Cruising Bars: Bukkake and Industry
American first-timers may never have been somewhere quite like these.
That does not mean you should be afraid to go in.
Bukkake
There is no required dress code.
Most people arrive in regular clothes.
You can rent a locker, change into a harness or other cruising gear and keep your valuables secure.
We strongly recommend using the locker, even if all you store is your phone.
The locker has historically required a small refundable deposit of around €5.
One big advantage is that Bukkake offers in-and-out privileges.
You can visit, leave and return later.
Industry
Industry is different.
Expect a naked-or-jock dress code, with clothing stored at entry.
Because of that setup, it does not offer in-and-out privileges.
It also gets hot.
Temperature hot.
Prepare for a sweaty good time.
What to Wear
Pack shorts.
Definitely shorts.
For daytime shopping, wear a nice lightweight shirt.
For the beach, tank tops work.
And bring a Speedo.
A good Speedo advertises exactly the parts of your body that deserve advertising.
You are in Europe.
Do it.
At night, we like a lightweight button-down that can be opened as the night gets hotter.
Plenty of bears eventually take their shirts off completely.
Above all, be comfortable.
It is still warm at the end of summer, and even when the evening air cools off, the temperature rises quickly when hundreds of bears pack into the same street.
Harnesses in public are normal during Bear Week.

You may see rubber.
The hanky code is very much alive.
You do not have to participate in anything you do not want to.
You also do not need to be shocked by anything you see.
Bear Village
Bear Village is one of the experiences every first-timer should see.
It is the big nightly beachside gathering with DJs, dancing and a bar.

The party usually starts around 9 p.m., but the crowd really gets going around 11 p.m. and continues into the early morning.
CruisingBears traditionally has a special Thursday-night gathering and T-shirt giveaway.
It is always fun seeing so many people wearing CruisingBears shirts around Bear Village. Come find us and say hello.
