Gay Bear Cruise Packing List: 5 Things You Really Don’t Want to Forget

Packing for a gay bear cruise starts innocently enough. A few shirts, some shorts, your favorite swimsuit…

Then suddenly you’re sitting on a suitcase containing three harnesses, seven party outfits and shoes you haven’t worn since the last time someone said, “It’s just a casual evening.”

At CruisingBears, we believe your vacation should be filled with great destinations, new friendships and plenty of opportunities to enjoy yourself. Spending your first afternoon wondering where you packed your medication shouldn’t be one of them.

Whether you’re a first-time cruiser or a seasoned sailor with a dedicated drawer for vacation swimwear, these five packing priorities will help you arrive prepared—and ready for the fun.

1. Your Travel Documents and Medications: The Least Sexy, Most Important Items

Your passport may never receive the compliments your pool outfit does, but it deserves the first spot on your packing list.

Before departure, check the travel-document requirements for your specific cruise and destinations. Keep your required identification, boarding information and medications in your carry-on so they’re accessible when you need them. Virgin Voyages specifically recommends keeping travel documents and medications with you.

It’s also sensible to save accessible copies of your booking confirmation and travel-insurance information.

Our packing trick: Create one small “boarding essentials” pouch. Before leaving home, check it deliberately instead of relying on that reassuring—but occasionally fictional—feeling that you packed everything.

Your party outfit can make a dramatic entrance later. Your travel documents need to make it to the terminal with you.

2. Your Theme-Party Outfits: Give Your Suitcase Some Personality

A cruise wardrobe has two jobs: keep you comfortable and help you enjoy the experiences you’ve been looking forward to.

For many LGBTQ+ cruises and hosted groups, that includes theme parties. VACAYA recommends checking the programming in advance so you can pack for the events you want to join.

Read your own sailing’s announcements before shopping. Party themes vary, and your group’s private events may have a separate schedule from the ship’s entertainment.

If you’re sailing with Virgin Voyages, remember something red for Scarlet Night and pajamas you’re happy to wear beyond your cabin door.

You don’t need an elaborate costume for every evening. A colorful shirt, playful accessory or favorite piece of gear can be enough to join in.

Our packing trick: Lay out each party look with its accessories before putting it in your suitcase. Finding out you forgot the one item that holds the whole look together is an unnecessarily exciting way to begin an evening.

And wear something you enjoy. You’re coming on vacation, not auditioning for the position of Most Elaborately Dressed Bear at Sea.

3. Two Swimsuits: One for You, One for the Drying Rotation

For a warm-weather cruise, two swimsuits are a practical starting point: one to wear while the other dries. Virgin Voyages includes this rotation in its Caribbean packing guidance.

Choose styles that feel good when you sit, walk and move—not just when you stand perfectly still in front of the bedroom mirror.

Swim briefs? Wonderful. Swim shorts? Excellent. Something bright enough for your friends to spot you from the opposite side of the pool? Very considerate.

Bears, chubs and chasers come in different shapes, sizes and styles. There’s no single look you need to achieve before you belong on vacation.

Our packing trick: Try on your swimwear before departure. Your cruise should introduce you to new friends, not surprise you with the current condition of last summer’s elastic.

4. Your Sun-and-Hydration Kit: Protect the Bear

Sunscreen, sunglasses, a hat and a refillable water bottle deserve space in your bag. Both Virgin Voyages and VACAYA highlight sun protection and hydration essentials in their packing advice.

Choose a hat you’ll actually wear and a bottle you’re comfortable carrying. The most stylish accessory in the world isn’t very helpful if it spends the entire cruise inside your cabin.

Keep these items together so they’re easy to grab before a pool afternoon or shore excursion.

Our packing trick: Think beyond the pool. A day exploring a port can involve plenty of time outdoors, even when swimming isn’t on the itinerary.

We fully support bringing a little heat to your vacation wardrobe. Becoming the same shade as your Scarlet Night outfit is less desirable.

5. Comfortable Shoes and a Small Day Bag: Your Quiet Vacation Heroes

Those new sandals might look magnificent. Before making them responsible for an entire sightseeing day, take them for a proper walk at home.

Virgin Voyages recommends comfortable walking shoes for shore excursions, while both Virgin and VACAYA suggest a small bag for carrying essentials.

A compact crossbody, lightweight backpack or drawstring bag can hold your phone, sunglasses and other necessities without requiring you to return to your cabin every twenty minutes.

It’s particularly useful when your outfit has no pockets. Apparently, certain fashion designers believe confidence is sufficient storage.

Our packing trick: Pack your day bag before leaving home, then carry it around briefly. If it already feels heavy, reconsider what you’ll want to haul through a port.

One More Thing to Bring: A Willingness to Say Hello

The most memorable part of a bear cruise often begins with something small: introducing yourself at a gathering, asking someone to join your table or recognizing a familiar face from yesterday’s excursion.

Coming alone? You don’t need to arrive with an established group to start making connections. Coming with friends? Leave a little room in the circle for someone new.

That sense of community is at the heart of CruisingBears: enjoying the journey with fellow Bears, Chubs & Chasers and giving yourself opportunities to turn shared experiences into friendships.
