World Pride River Cruise: From Basel to the Black Forest

Our World Pride River Cruise Began Before We Boarded the Ship

Every great group trip has a moment when a collection of strangers starts to feel like a community. For us, that moment happened in Basel.

Our World Pride River Cruise would eventually take us from Switzerland to Amsterdam aboard Viking River Cruises, but the experience did not truly begin at the gangway. It started the day before embarkation, when CruisingBears brought the group together for a complimentary walking tour of Basel.

We were traveling with a mix of Gay Bears, Chubs, and Chasers. Some of us were couples, some were single, and others were traveling with friends. Many of us had chatted before the trip, but this was the first time most of us had met face-to-face. That early introduction changed the entire tone of the cruise.

Meeting the CruisingBears Group in Basel

Basel was more than our departure city. It became the place where our group first came together. CruisingBears arranged for a local guide to lead us through the city, giving us a chance to explore Basel while getting to know our fellow travelers. Walking together made conversation easy. There was always something to admire, photograph, or laugh about.

Instead of sitting in a hotel lobby making formal introductions, we were discovering a beautiful European city side by side. By the end of the walking tour, names were becoming familiar. Small groups had formed naturally. People were already making dinner plans, comparing travel stories, and talking about what they were most excited to experience along the Rhine.

Dinner Before the Cruise

After the walking tour, we gathered for dinner together. By then, the introductions already felt less formal. We were no longer simply people booked on the same cruise. We were becoming friends.

The evening gave everyone time to relax, swap stories, and continue the conversations that had started during the tour. Couples mixed effortlessly with solo travelers, and by the end of dinner, the nervousness that sometimes comes with joining a group trip had completely disappeared.

This was especially valuable for anyone traveling alone. There was no wondering who to sit with or how to meet people. The friendships had already started before the cruise even began.

Embarkation Day Felt Like a Reunion

The following morning, we boarded the Viking Gersemi. Normally, embarkation day is when passengers begin introducing themselves. For us, it felt more like a reunion.

We recognized familiar faces from the walking tour, picked up conversations where we had left off the night before, and settled into the ship knowing we were already surrounded by friends. That was one of the biggest advantages of traveling with CruisingBears.

The friendships didn't feel forced or scheduled. They developed naturally through shared experiences, laughter, and the excitement of beginning a new adventure together.

Our First Excursion: Germany's Black Forest

Our first full day brought us into Germany's legendary Black Forest. This was one of those excursions that seemed to capture everything we'd imagined about the region. We watched a traditional cuckoo clock spring to life, visited a fascinating glassblowing factory where artisans demonstrated skills passed down through generations, and enjoyed an authentic slice of Black Forest Cake that was every bit as rich and delicious as we'd hoped.

Sharing these experiences as a group made them even more memorable. Cameras came out, conversations flowed, and everyone appreciated seeing these famous traditions in the place where they originated.

The Running Joke of the Day

Our guide also gave us one of the funniest moments of the trip. During the drive, they explained Germany's relaxed attitude toward nudity, mentioning that in certain designated areas near lakes and rivers, nude recreation is accepted.

From that moment on, nearly everyone on the bus suddenly became very interested in looking out the windows whenever we passed a body of water. Eyes were scanning every riverbank, every lakeshore, and every sunny patch of grass. Despite everyone's determination, not a single nude sunbather was spotted.

The search became a running joke that continued throughout the rest of the cruise. Sometimes it's those unexpected little moments, rather than the major attractions, that become the memories everyone laughs about long after the trip is over.

Why the First Day Was So Special

The Black Forest gave us beautiful scenery, local traditions, incredible food, and plenty of laughs. More importantly, it strengthened the friendships that had begun in Basel.

We experienced everything together. We watched the same cuckoo clock perform, admired the craftsmanship of the glassblowers, enjoyed authentic Black Forest Cake, and shared countless laughs along the way. By the time we returned to the Viking Gersemi, it no longer felt like we had just started a cruise. It felt like we were traveling across Europe with old friends.

Was a CruisingBears Group Cruise Worth It?

Without question. The complimentary Basel walking tour broke the ice before embarkation. The group dinner turned acquaintances into friends. By the time we boarded the ship, we already felt like part of a community.

Whether you travel as a couple, with friends, or completely on your own, joining a hosted CruisingBears group removes so much of the uncertainty that can come with group travel. Instead of wondering who you'll meet, you quickly find yourself surrounded by people who share your love of travel, adventure, and creating unforgettable memories together.

And this was only the beginning. In the next article, we'll continue our journey up the Rhine, share what life aboard Viking River Cruises was really like, explain our unexpected mid-cruise ship transfer from the Viking Gersemi to the Viking Hervor due to low water levels, and visit some of the most beautiful towns along the river.

If this first chapter taught us anything, it's that the best part of a river cruise isn't just the destinations. It's the people you share the journey with.
